Well the good news is that a connection to the Santa Fe Trail through downtown to Katy Trail is a top priority for the Dallas Bike Plan... Bad news is the City has to now find the money to do it.

Friends of Santa Fe Trail Announces Inaugural Santa Fe Trail 5k

Run and Celebratory Event to take place in Lindsley Park on October 13

(Dallas-September 12, 2011) - The Friends of the Santa Fe Trail announced that the inaugural Santa Fe Trail 5k will take place on Thursday, October 13^th starting at 5:15pm. The event will feature a 5k race that will begin and end at Lindsley Park concluding with a post-race after party for participants and attendees that will include food, drinks and music donated by local restaurants and vendors including Bryan Street, Jack’s Chowhound, Ruthies Rolling Café, Green House Truck, Three Men and a Taco, Enticed and Gennarino's Food Trucks.

“We are extremely excited about getting this first race off the ground,” said Chris Angarola, President of the Friends of the Santa Fe Trail. “We are very please with our race partner Run On! and the other terrific sponsors that have signed on. We hope to have over 500 runners in the inaugural race which will then become benchmark for future races.”

Race Director Lear Johnson said, “The Santa Fe 5K is a great addition to the East Dallas scene. This unique Thursday evening race will be fun with the live music, beer and of course every foodies dream…a slew of food trucks. We are thrilled to help host this race,”

The Santa Fe 5k race registration begins at 5:15pm with the race starting at 6:15. . The post-race after party will conclude at 8pm. The Santa Fe Trail is an exciting and important four-mile link connecting Downtown Dallas with White Rock Lake. It currently connects to the 14+ Mile White Rock Bike Trail System and will stretch from Downtown Dallas to LBJ and soon, with the competition of the Cotton Wood Trail, will allow riders to go from Plano all the way to Downtown Dallas solely on bike trails. This trail system will be a jewel for East Dallas; boosting the quality of life and yet another notable attraction for its residents.

Friends of Santa Fe Trail is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for capital improvements, programs and operations related to the trail and generally supporting and enhancing the trail. The Friends group has raised money for a master plan for the trail that will help set the agenda for future improvements.... benches, water, trees and signs.

With new bike trails opening all over Dallas the Santa Fe Trail will become a vital link between great destinations in downtown and East Dallas/Lakewood.

DALLAS CYCLE SUNDAY June 26th

The inaugural Dallas Cycle Sunday will take place on June 26th. This first-time event will feature a ride that will begin with a “meet-up” downtown at Main Street Garden Park at 10:00AM (see map). At 10:30AM all riders will do a loop through Downtown and Deep Ellum, and arrive at the Dallas Complete Streets Kickoff/Better Block on Ross Avenue at approximately 11AM. With enough willing participants, Cycle Sunday will continue on to the White Rock Lake Centennial Celebration. This is a chance to visit two events while enjoying a casual group ride and demonstrating legal bicycling. We look forward to seeing you. Please wear your helmets!

ROCKSRAVAGANZA Benefiting Neighborhood Schools

Help support our neighborhood schools and have a great afternoon of family fun at ROCKSRAVAGANZA in Deep Ellum. The event is Sunday May 29^th from 12Pm to 7PM. There will be 40 live shows on 5 stages. Many of the kids performing are form our neighborhood.

Group Ride to Deep Ellum Art Festival

Join the Friends of the Santa Fe Trail for a fun ride down the trail to the Deep Ellum Arts Festival. Check out the website for more information on artist, food and music.

Plan to meet at White Rock Spillway Parking lot at 12pm on Sunday

The plan is to meet at the White Rock Lake Spillway and the new Parking lot that you access off of Winsted Drive. We will take the trail all the way to Deep Ellum --- If you already live along the trial feel free to join us at any point. We will ride as a group to the festival then everyone can ride back on their own schedule. To my knowledge the festival is not planning on having any kind of bike valet so be sure to bring a chain or something so you can lock your bike and walk around.

Trail Clean Up Being Planned for April 16th

We are working hard to plan our first trail clean up for April 16 starting at 8am till 10am. We hope this will be a fun opportunity for everyone to get to know their neighbors and get involved in the trail. The plan is to meet at Randall Park. We will divide the trail into sections and everyone can divide up and clean. Then meet back at Randall Park for some refreshments.

White Rock Creek Trail gets a Friends Group

White Rock Creek Trail... That trail that connect White Rock DART Station and Lake with the new Cotton Wood Trail and goes all the way to LBJ Freeway. The trail is a little more narrow then the newer trails but is a great ride along the creek bottom and with a group to help improve it could be a great destination in itself.

They have a meeting coming up in Lake Highlands on Feb 10th to get organized. To learn more go to their website. whiterocktrail.org
